Pharmacognostic and Preliminary Phytochemical Evaluation of Leaf of Syzygium Cumini (L.) Skeels

Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels (Family: Myricaceae) commonly known as Jamun is a widely used medicinal plant in Ayurveda. In spite of its numerous attributes, no published work available on pharmacognostic characterization, physicochemical analysis leaves. The measures taken for characterization were macroscopy, microscopy, powder evaluation, fluorescence analysis, and preliminary phytochemical screening. microscopic evaluation showed useful characters the recognition leaf . Transverse section, presence single layer wavy epidermal cells with striated cuticle Palisade beneath upper epidermis lamina region (contains compact elongated cells), Spheraphide region, collenchyma below above lower midrib Xylem phloem center, Sclerenchyma between vascular bundle region. Wavy cell epidermis, anisocytic stomata Bordered pitted reticulate vessels, Calcium oxalate crystal sheath lamina, fragment fibers Spiral vessels observed microscopy. Physicochemical studies total ash (3.1%), acid insoluble (0.7%), alcohol soluble extractive values (10.96 %), water-soluble (12.32 %). Phytochemical revealed sugar, lipid, Glycoside, saponins, phenols, flavonoids, tannins, tri-terpenoids steroids. study forms first report parameter which could be identification authentication plant.
